Career options for a Biochemistry student - Himanshu - 08-07-2015

Hi Experts,

My Wife has done BSc+MSc in Biochemistry, BEd and 2 years of Teaching experience in a convent school.

1. Kindly tell me what are the career options in Biochemistry apart from JRF/LS?
2. Also please name the list of Competitive Exams available to do JRF/LS.
3. Right now she is going to appear in ICSR-NET exam to be held in Dec. 2015. Please guide me if she can appear in other relevant exams as well.

Thank you,
Regards
Himanshu

Hello Himanshu,
GATE is always an option. I guess you are talking about CSIR UGC-NET? I haven't heard of/know ICSR-NET. If she is below 28, then ICMR JRF is also an option. The following thread should also interest you:

Hello Mr Nagpal,

Yes it is CSIR-NET; by mistake I wrote the wrong acronym. Looking at the qualification, what will be the best career option for her according to you?
Also could u please tell me in priority list which exam should she target first; as I am being new to this field i hardly have any knowledge on it.

Thank you
Regards,
Himanshu

Hi,

I believe she should pursue a PhD (which would cater to financial goals, given the appraisal of academic scholarships to 32000 p.m for PhD students; as well as polish her career requirements). After PhD she should easily tread on the path of Academics (being a lecturer/assistant prof/prof/even scientist in a research institute). Given her career background, that would be the best option.

She can get into scientific editing and proof-reading as well, but that often becomes monotonous sooner or later.

She could get an RA (Research Associate) position if her professional background was related to her field (or if she was a fresher), but to my understanding, getting an RA position would be difficult as of now. But nevertheless, if procured a seat for PhD (after qualifying an exam like CSIR/GATE/ICMR), she would be in a much better stand (monetarily and professionally) as compared to a career as an RA.

She should target every exam with an aim for a PhD.

Hope it helps

Best wishes

Hello Mr. Nagpal,

Thank you so much for the guidance. Now I have one more doubt if you can clarify- To do Phd. she should go for JRF program or LS program through the entrance exams u mentioned? If I am correct through both JRF and LS a candidate can pursue Phd.

Best Regards,
Himanshu

Well she can get PhD through LS as well but she might not get the scholarship in that case. Getting a scholarship is only possible in sponsored schemes of HRD/other agencies (with due preference to JRF qualified people). And this is for CSIR UGC NET only. And she should apply for JRF only in the exam (As a JRF is auto considered for LS but an LS cannot apply for JRF).

And clearing GATE will also make her eligible for JRF.

Hello Mr. Nagpal,

I would like to know the best way to prepare for CSIR NET JRF exam and other similar exams? I was searching on the net for books available in the market and got few ones like Arihant or Upkar publications. Could you please guide me which books should I refer for a thorough preparation for Life science- Biochemistry subject?

Regards,
Himanshu
