The Development of Biocomputers
#2
Biocomputers performs computational calculations involving storing, retrieving and processing data using biologically derived molecules such as Protein, DNA etc, The success of biocomputers is great now a days with development in the field of nanobiotechnology. Nanotechnology can be defined as a technology which uses nano sized (1-100 nanometes) material as well as biological material.
At present, biocomputers possess various functional capabilities that include but not limited to operations of logical activities and mathematical calculations. In these computers, Protein concentrations are used as binary signals that help in performing logical operations. This was first suggested by Tom Knight at MIT Artificial Intelligence Laboratory. All depends on the concentration of biomolecule being used. For example certain concentration of protein will indicate either 1 or 0 (binary), the change in concentration will change the binary status from either 0 to 1 or vice versa and thus performs logical operations.
Bio-computers also perform mathematical calculations, one such concept was provided by W.L.Ditto in which he used leech neurons which were capable of performing simple addition and other simple mathematical calculations. These are few notable examples of uses of bio-computers, but today these are increasingly used in more sophisticated way with development in technology and science. This technology is being used further to develop this field more.
Due to such potential, one day bio computer will be used more widely and in various fields. We all know that human brain works better than computer and in true sense is itself is a bio-computer.

Therefore today’s developing field of bio-computers has true potential in it and this will be reflected in different ways during the course of development, obviously with human brain (A Bio-Computer) as a benchmark!
