GATE Advice to Low Scorers

I know that u have very good experiences regarding the admissions specially in IITs, I have read all your articles and it really motivated me.

So can you please give me some interview tips and questions as this will be my first time?
And I also lack a bit of confidence as my rank is not that good to get into an IIt

Hello Trinanjan,

Well Thanks for your words of appreciation. I am glad that the articles help you guys out in some way.

For interviews, following things should always be kept prepared:

1) Your major Project that you did in B.Tech (thorough questioning on your project is done)
2) Your research interest
3) Your favourite subject and then thorough questioning on that subject.
4) Topics related to the degree you are applying for (for example: for IITB, questions related to Bioinstruments, Tissue culture, synthetic organs, nanobiotech are expected. For IITD, questions related to Biochemistry, Enzymes, Microbial and Enzyme Kinetics, Bioreactos are expected. and so on).

And donot loose confidence. As I told you all, in the first stage of screening, the GATE Rank has no meaning at all. If you clear the test you are through to interview, otherwise even Rank 1 holder can be shown the doors. If you are eligible to apply, you have equal chances of selection as others (it's only in the interview that they consider your GATE score, but if you impress your interviewers, nobody looks at your GATE score). I had 99.6 percentile, but still I couldn't impress the interview panel (my Rank/score had no bearing at all).

So stay confident and prepare well with cool state of mind!

All the best!

Hi Trinanjan,

Jadhavpur is good but not a very good option as compared to IIT Kharagpur (which is also nearby), or IIT Guwahati (which is not far). You can get PhD at IITKgp as well as IITGw. And do consider the CSIR labs as well. The reason I'm saying so is that a PhD from an IIT/CSIR lab will exponentially increase your chances of getting a great job offer/teaching position, as compared to Jadhavpur or other University.

Hope it helps

Best wishes

Sunil

Hello Mr Sunil

Could you please throw some light on different career options available in Environment Engineering and how best that would suit some one with a Bachelor's Degree in Bio-Tech. Had some concerns on its job prospects and hence this question.

Thank You for your time and help

Hello Sri,

Environment Engineering has good career prospects both in corporate sector and government sector. Goes without saying that you will have to seriously pursue your degree to ensure that your performance and projects mask your background (but sometime that can be an asset as well, like getting a job in an Efluent Treatment Plant, or some consultancy firm that deals with Environmental Biotechnology).

Once you get such a degree from the likes of IITB, you are rather eligible for a wide range of companies (core/non core).

L&T, Reliance, P&G, J&J, Ganga Action Plan etc have some of the hot jobs in this field (but they were awarded to those who cleared their cut-offs as well as the written test and interviews).

It's an emerging field, and you can land in a good career if you keep yourself an exceptional performer (curricular and non-curricular both).

Hope it helps

Best wishes

Dear Sunil,

I qualified GATE 2015 with GATE score 433 and AIR 657.
I have done my BE in Biomedical with an aggregate of 80.17% and had the opportunity to complete my final year engineering project from IIT Bombay as an external student
I also have one year work experience in TCS.
Please suggest what chances I have for admission to IITs and NITs for an Mtech

Thanks

Hello Sunil,

I had done M.Sc. Biotechnology. I qualified Gate 2015 in Life science with AIR 970 and Gate Score 400, but I am having very low Percentile i.e. 87.97%. What should I do? Where I can apply for M.Tech. & Ph.D. also?

Abhishek.

Looking at your GATE score and your experience, I believe you should easily get IITB/IITK/IITM. Focus hard on IITB (GATE score cut-off for general category being 400). Once you get into IITB, your career will definitely rise high. IIT Hyderabad/University of Hyderabad are both good options. Go for top 3 NITs only, other NITs don't have good placement records for M.Techs.

And, apply at AcSIR for PhD as well (only if you are interested in pursuing PhD).

Your percentile is aboave 90? Why don't you try at NUS/DAAD?

Hope it helps

Best wishes

Hi Abhishek,

Consider University of Mumbai, University of Hyderabad, IIT Guwahati, IIT Hyderabad, NCCS, IISERs, AcSIR.

If you are eligible for IIT Hyderabad, I can try getting links for you there, who can assist you in cracking the interview.

Best wishes
