GATE Advice to Low Scorers
Hi,

Well you have nailed it! Goes without saying that you'll be getting interview calls from every single IIT, as well as IISc and even CSIR labs of the likes of NCL.
Your next target should be preparing for the interviews. You can visit BiotechStudents.com and read my interview experiences to get an idea of the same. Apart from that, I strongly recommend applying for PhD at NUS and HKTU. And besides that, while applying at various IITs, ensure that you fill the forms for MS/MTech as well as PhD interviews.

Your career should be smooth sailing once you get intoan IIT or NUS.

Congrats again and best wishes

(It would be great if you share your GATE attempting experience with the community).

All the best!

Hello Raj,
Congrats for your score. You should be getting calls from IIT Madras, Kanpur, Guwahati. If you apply for departments othr than biotech then you may expect calls from other IITs as well. Assuming your percentile is well above 90, I suggest you as well to try for PhD at NUS.

All the best

Dear Sir,

Thanks for the encouragement. Sir, I just want to ask many IIT's like Kharagpur etc have written that 70% gate score and 30 % interview/assessment based on written tests as selection criteria. So, in that case what are the chances as someone in top 25 has a score of more than 800("he/she clearly has an edge"). And I am interested in fields related to bio medical and my second priority will be bioinformatics. Sir plz guide me as I am stuck in a tricky situation. My gate score :- 602 @ 137 rank.

Thanks
Rob

Hi Rob,

70-30 criterion comes into play when the Interviews are too difficult to decide the candidate. But, even if a top 10 rank holder gives a bad interview, he will not be selected (I can guarantee that to you, that's well witnessed).

So, focus well on your written and interviews coming ahead. You can choose your specialization through the project you work upon during your Masters. In IIT Madras, you can specifically go for Computational Biotechnology as a sub-branch. In, IIT Delhi, if some one works with Dr. Sundar, his/her branch of specialization is expected to be Bioinformatics. So, that's how you can choose your field of interest. But that's a long shot from here. Right now, the focus should be preparations for written and interviews.

Best wishes

Hello Prankur,

Whereas your GATE, BSc and MSc scores are really nice, I'm afraid your highschool and intermediate marks could be matter of concern (please do check the minimum eligibility marks for 10th and 12th for getting admission in IITs/NITs). If there is a special case of UP board, then there is nothing to worry about (I've heard that UP board is quite strict in marking).

You should go for PhD from here. After MSc your case is more apt for PhD than MTech. And, as I suggest to everyone else, you should also try for NTU/NUS/HKTU.

Best wishes
