Job opportunities after M.Tech/MS in Biotechnology
#1
This thread attempts to help students pursuing Masters in Biotechnology or related field to make some informed career decisions. We would like to thank our user "aruporacle" for asking the relevant questions. Following is a summary of the conversation between "aruporacle" and "SunilNagpal":

Dear Sunil,

Need your advice and some guidance please.

My daughter is currently studying M.Tech in Biotechnology from NIT Rourkela and will complete in June 2016.

If we wish to admit her in NSU, Singapore for her PHD in Biotechnology.

1. Which Intake Period (August 2016 or January 2017 or August 2017) is appropriate and recommended for her PHD, assuming her M.Tech result will not be declared before June 2016?

2. Depending on the intake period, can she use her existing GATE-Biotechnology February 2014 score (All India Rank of 292, percentile = 97.27%) or will she have to again appear for GATE in February 2016?

Regards,
Arup

Response from Sunil:

Your daughter should first apply for August 2016 intake (applications will start by May 15, 2015 and shall continue till November 2015). This would let her utilize her GATE 2014 score card which would expire in March 2016. The interviews for August 2016 intake would be organized in January-February 2016 (her GATE 2014 score card would be valid till then). To ensure a back-up, she should appear for GATE 2016 as well. Applications for January 2017 intake would last till May 2016 (ample time to apply for the January 2017 intake using GATE 2016 results).

There is need not be any worry about the declaration of the results. They will seek marksheets till penultimate semester only. Once the results are declared, she should ensure that she takes all her documents along.

Although she can apply for January 2016 intake as well, but completing M.Tech would definitely add to her resume/strength.

Hope it helps
If there's anything else that I can help with, do let me know.

Best wishes
Sunil

Dear Sunil,

Thank you very much for your responses and clarifications to my queries.

Yes, I need your help to guide my daughter for getting a job opportunity. She is in fact looking for a job in biotech industry to gain some industry experience instead of doing her PhD now.
After passing out her BTech from PESIT, Bangalore in 2012, she was placed in WIPRO Technologies for SAP software related assignments which she did not enjoy much and hence she quit after working for 7-8 months to pursue her masters. But in her M.Tech program also, she is not getting the right kind of exposure. So she needs a job to get the practical exposure and skills so that she can apply her potential and contribute.

So, can you please suggest how to go about it?
1. what are the job opportunities she should avail after completing her M.Tech in bio technology from NIT Rourkela in June 2016?
2. which companies are relevant for her with M.Tech degree?
3. How to apply or which are the exams?
4. Is NET also ok and applicable?

Kindly advise and help.
best regards,

I am happy that the responses helped you to some extent. Let me address your queries one by one:

1.  what are the job opportunities she should avail after completing her M.Tech in bio technology from NIT Rourkela in June 2016?
I would like to know her expertise (reflected by her project profiles in B.Tech and M.Tech) and the courses (subjects) she pursued in M.Tech. Masters being a specialization, job profiles tend to be specific to the expertise of the candidate.
Based upon her expertise, she can land up in following domains:
a). Quality control engineer in Pharmaceutical companies like Biocon, Wockhardt, Panacea. MNCs in F&B like Nestle can also be  potential job zones.
b). Associate consultant in Life Sciences domain of big IT companies like Wipro, TCS, IBM, Accenture, Infosys etc.
c). Research Associate in govt Institutes like CSIR labs, IITs.
d). Research Associate/Production engineer in CRAMS like Premas (Gurgaon).
e). Contractual jobs in DBT/other govt sectors like Ganga action plan.
f). Jobs in WHO, UNICEF (based on availability).

2.  which companies are relevant for her with M.Tech degree?
Again, her academic profile will assist in responding more specifically, but most of the opportunities and corresponding companies are mentioned in my response to your 1st question.

3. How to apply or which are the exams?
a. First of all subscribe for the employment newspaper (rendered once in a week by the local newspaper vendors across India). It's going to help you/your daughter keep track of "all government jobs in Biotech and related sectors.

b. Campus placement always remains the best option to get into a good company.

c. CSIR labs and IITs release the information of the positions for RAship on their websites only. Positions are offered many times a year.

d. For off-campus placement in MNCs, look for a referral first (referred candidates are often preferred in MNCs). Other option remains applying in their job board/career section. MNCs also release walkin opportunities, which needs an alert vigilance of their career portal.

e. Biocon and Syngene organize quite a number of walkins. And their job portal remains flooded with career opportunities for deserving candidates.

f. Except for the govt jobs, there aren't any entrance exams. The screening tests do happen, which is followed in almost every firm for recruitment.

g. There are some HRs actively looking for good candidates on LinkedIn. Ask your daughter to maintain a good profile at LinkedIn, which is considered an online resume these days.

h. Companies like PREMAS can directly be approached through email/telephone about vacancies.

i. WHO, UNICEF, UNDP have active job portals, but very few are aware of them. Explore them well, and you might find some suitable contractual job for your daughter for a life time of experience.

4. Is NET also ok and applicable ?
NET is a must for a teaching position in colleges these days. It also boosts the chances of getting an RAship/PhD in India.

I hope these points help you/your daughter to some extent.

Feel free to clear any other doubt.

Best wishes

Sunil

Dear Sunil,
I have completed my b.tech in biotechnolgy in 2015. I am very much interested in pursuing a career in Environmental biotechnology or Microbiology. There is no m.tech degrees for the above mentioned fields, so Is switching to Msc. microbiology/ environmental  a better option or to join M.E/M.Tech environmental engineering. Please also give details about job opportunities in the above mentioned fields.
