Recently I received a query through personal communication from a GATE aspirant. Thought to respond to the person concerned publicly so as to help others in addressing the similar queries.

Quote:Query:

I am preparing for GATE BT and going to appear this year in february. I am also working on a govt.project as my dissertation in CSIR insitute. With just one month in hand I dont know how to plan or to prepare or to execute. the other works collapses this. I need your guidance and i am on the neck that I should clear gate with a good score this time.

Quote:Response:

Hi ****,

My suggestions might sound redundant (if you have gone through previous articles of mine), but following is the ideal strategy to prepare for GATE in last few months:

1. PREVIOUS YEAR PAPERS ARE BIBLE FOR LAST MONTHS

Go through each and every question of the previous year papers thoroughly. Pick one paper at a time, and explore it from neck to tail. By being thorough, I mean something like the following approach:

http://in.biotechstudents.com/antibiotic...-gram-neg/

While going through the previous year papers, it is extremely important to pay special attention to the papers of the years in which the organizing  institute of GATE was same as the current organizer.

2. EXPLORE THE ORGANIZING INSTITUTE

Go through the faculty profile of the organizing institute and pay attention to expertise of the junior faculty (Assistant / Associate professors). It is very likely that atleast 4-5 questions will pertain to their expertise/ subjects they teach.

3. GIVE A LOT OF MOCK TESTS
Nothing trains you better than acclimatizing yourself with the blue print of the exam and simulating the exam environment. Most people fail in competitive exams due to the exam anxiety (and hence subdued performance of their nervous system) rather than lack of preparation.
Your mind is world's most complicated but wonderful machine. If trained well about the exam conditions, it will help you decipher answers to seemingly difficult questions by referring deepest corners of your subconscious memory (one must not forget that there is a huge catalog of theory, concepts, practicals etc. spanning the entire degree course in one's mind). Ideally, one doesn't need any special preparation for exams like GATE, as every question pertains to the concepts one learns in 3-4 years of his/her degree course (an active and confident mind will find a way to solve various problems it confronts). Hence, in the situations of last minutes, the best preparation is in 'boosting yourself & your confidence' by conditioning your mind to the exam environment (not once but time and again).  This way, you will brush up your concepts in addition to making yourself accustomed to the exam.
"Confidence is the key. Don't forget that every student appearing for GATE is as common (and as special) as you are. He/She is also anxious and in stress. In the end, the one who manages his/her anxiety well, will succeed"

January 1st Marked the first day of work for the New Chief of United Nations - Secretary-General António Guterres.
In his first speech, he vowed to make 2017 a year of Peace and said:

The New Secretary General of United Nations was emotional in expressing that one question weighs heavy on my heart,
Quote:“That is: how can we help the millions of people caught up in conflict, suffering massively in wars with no end in sight?”

“Peace must be our goal and our guide,”  the new chief of UN said and urged all citizens, governments and leaders to strive for overcoming their differences.

“I appeal to you all to join me in committing to peace, today and every day. Let us make 2017 a year for peace,” he urged.

He was formally appointed by the UN General Assembly to the post of New Chief of United  Nations on 13 October 2016.

Mr. Guterres ages 67 and will serve for a five-year period from 1st January 2017 to 31 December 2021.

Hey guys,

I'm trying to find a polymer for a controlled diffusion of glucose. Currently, I am using membrane systems, but I have to punch them manually and handle them with a tweezer so that it could happen that the membranes are being harmed which leads to different pore distribution.
Is there a reliable way to produce polymer matrices for controlled diffusion of glucose in a reliable and reproducible way?

Best Regards,
Moe

In a study published in 'The Lancet' (on Thursday, 22nd December 2016) , an experimental (rVSV-vectored) vaccine  against the Ebola virus has been found to be 100% effective!

no longer available

This study and its results have emerged as a great sigh of relief not only for Africa (this disease created havoc in 2014 by causing death of over 11,000 people!), but also for the entire world where the Ebola Virus has been spreading ceaselessly. As quoted by Dr. KeÏta Sakoba, director of Guinea's  'National Agency for Health Security'.
Quote:Ebola left a devastating legacy in our country. We are proud that we have been able to contribute to developing a vaccine that will prevent other nations from enduring what we endured”

About this 'Ebola Vaccine'

rVSV-ZEBOV, the vaccine used in the study, is a recombinant, replication competent vesicular stomatitis virus-based candidate vaccine expressing a surface glycoprotein of Zaire Ebolavirus

In this study, the effect of rVSV-ZEBOV in preventing Ebola virus disease in contacts and contacts of contacts of recently confirmed cases in Guinea, west Africa was tested.

Following is the brief of their story:

In 2015, this experimental vaccine was administered to residents of Guinea 'who were in contact with patients who had recently confirmed cases of Ebola'.

Few months post these early trials, the WHO identified the preliminary results of the trials as an “extremely promising development.”

The trial involving > 11000 people, was later led by WHO in conjunction with Guinea’s Ministry of Health.

Total 5,837 people were administered the rVSV-ZEBOV vaccine, and none recorded any case of Ebola post 10 days or longer.

Vaccine side effects in some subjects were observed, but were limited to headaches, fatigue and muscle pain. Two subjects had serious reactions, one who having an allergic reaction.

Ring strategy of this study for 100% Effective Ebola Vaccine

Ebola is not new to the world (first discovered in 1976). Being limited to isolated African communities for almost 3 decades, its outbreaks were always manageable, and hence wasn't considered a major threat.

But, in 2014, a major outbreak took place, wherein Ebola virus reached cities and started spreading like wildfire (catching the entire global health community off guard and clueless about this sudden and huge outbreak). From Africa, it started spreading to other continents/countries/states/cities and countrysides. This called for a concerted effort.

Categorized as a highly contagious virus, Ebola can spread once patients are symptomatic. So, the relatives of the patients are at great risk of exposure while they try to take care of their loved ones. With an aim to combat this, researchers designed the vaccine administration approach in such a way that the Ebola Vaccine should be doled out to "clusters” or “rings” — groups of people who had been in contact with an Ebola patient (same strategy that was used to eradicate smallpox).

The logic behind this approach, as explained by John-Arne Rottingen of the Norwegian Institute of Public Health to CNN is quite legit:
Quote:“The premise is that by vaccinating all people who have come into contact with an infected person, you create a protective ‘ring’ and stop the virus from spreading further”
After this huge reported success, the Ebola vaccine production has been fast tracked by US and European regulatory agencies.

Merck, Sharp & Dohme manufactured the vaccine for the trial and are producing for further actions as well.

As per the promise of Merck: 300,000 doses of the vaccine will be available in case of a new Ebola flareup. Merck will be submitting the Ebola vaccine for licensing by the close of 2017.

Following is the entire research paper published in "The Lancet":

Respected Sunil Sir ,

I was very comfortable with your answer that you wrote.
Since I am an aspirant of biotechnology , i read your answers on jobs in india for biotechnology students .

To be very specific and straightforward i want to ask you that what are the jobs opportunities in abroad in countries like USA
UAE ( I heard of duBiotech park in dubai ,does it gives jobs to m.tech graduates?)
etc.
After M.Tech from good IIT

Since i am not too much interested in pay scale (salaries) but still i want to know that what are the salaries they give to indian students .

And what is the average and highest package in India after M.tech and abroad .

Thanking You.

Respect Sunil Nagpal sir ,
I have read many answers on Quora.com and on biotechnology forums but still not satisfied.
To be very specific, i am currently doing my 12 boards preparations and i want to do b.tech in biotechnology. My way of thinking is that since i am a pure biology student I thought of doing b.tech in biotechnology from VIT vellore
And after doing b.tech I would apply for gate biotechnology to get an good iit to complete my m.tech .
Is i am thinking correctly?? And what type of problems faced by pure biology student in mathematics during gate ??

Can i get a better and good job after completing my m.tech ??
Plz answer my query so i can start my carrier with better beginning.
