What is the best option- M.SC ( BIOTECHNOLOGY or BIOINFORMATICS ) - SUNNY CHAKRABORTY - 06-21-2012

I'VE COMPLETED MY B.Sc (Hons in BIOTECHNOLOGY ) IN 2011. FROM LAST 1YRS, DUE TO SOME FINANCIAL PROBLEMS, I COULDN'T CONTINUE MY FURTHER EDUCATION. NOW I'VE A WISH TO DO M.Sc. BUT NOW I'M CONFUSED. SOME FRIENDS SUGGEST ME TO DO M.Sc ( BIOTECHNOLOGY ) & SOME M.Sc ( BIOINFORMATICS ). NOW I WANNA KNOW WHAT SHOULD I DO?
I WANNA MAKE MY CARRER BRIGHT LIKE EVERYONE WANT. INSTEAD OF THAT I WANNA KNOW THE TYPES OF THE JOB, NAME OF THE COMPANIES, WHAT THE % OF GETTING A JOB.................. IN BOTH SUBJECT, AFTER COMPLETING M.Sc.
SO PLZZZZZZZZZZ, HELP ME OUT FROM THIS STATE. GIVE ME A SUITABLE SUGGESTION....HuhHuh

Hello friends I am Libby here. I like the bioinformatics way to improve ourself. M.sc in bioinformatics is a good platform in study group but biotechnology is also relevant in this way. So after graduation in biotechnology It is a good option to continue study in same way.

According to me Biotechnology is the best one up on the bioformatics. I just want to say thanks to all of you for this information. Keep it up.

Hiii...I would like to give the answer of your query. As far as my knowledge is concerned Bioinformatics deals with quantitative analysis of data in molecular biology plus you will be dealing in computer programming and algorithm. You will get a job profile of DATA ANALYSIS.If you have interest in computer technology then you may go for this option...Whereas biotechnology deals with genetic engineering and bio products.
So i would prefer you biotechnology its future us also wide.

Dear Mr. Sunny,

Thank for your query.

The basic difference in Biotechnology and Bio-informatics is that Biotechnology deals with biological science with the use of technology, including use of Genetic Engineering in the production of recombinant proteins, transgenic plants, animals, vaccine and other pharmaceuticals drugs. They are also partly in research and partly in the manufacturing of these innovations. While Bio-informatics deals with information technology and biological sciences. These include DNA sequencing; protein modeling by using software tools and drug designing are also covered under the bio-informatics.
Today the growth and scope in biotechnology is anytime more than that of bioinformatics. Many research works today consider bioinformatics as one of the part or tool in the development of biotechnology science. But no dough this is very essential part. Considering your earlier education in the field of biotechnology and by comparing the scope of both biotech and bioinformatics, I will definitely like to see your future education and career in Biotechnology only.

In spite of this if you feel that bioinformatics is suitable for you then kindly ensure that you develop your base in below mentioned bioinformatics as your earlier education is in biotechnology as as to be successful in academic career.
Have fairly deep background in aspect of molecular biology. It can be biochemistry, molecular biology, molecular biophysics, or even molecular modeling.
Learn at least one or two major molecular biology software packages, either for sequence analysis or molecular modeling. The experience of learning one of these packages makes it much easier to learn to use other complex software quickly during PG.
Learn Linux or Unix and programming in a computer language such as Java, Unix, C, C++, RDBMS such as Oracle and Sybase, CORBA, Perl or Python, CGI and web scripting.

But, considering your background & biotech scope, I will definitely like to see your future education and career in Biotechnology only.
