Do you know of any IITs that offer M Tech in Bio-Informatics?  (I know IIITs do).  Also your views on prospects Bioinformatics would be appreciated.
Thank You
Sri

Hello Sri,

M.Tech in Bioinformatics is not specifically offered by most IITs, but the choice of your project and program electives is what defines the nature of your course. In IITD one can opt for a project under Dr. Sundar to pursue a specialization in Bioinfo. In IITB, one may pursue a course under Dr. Balaji. In IIT Madras, Dr. Athi and Dr. Mukesh; and so on (IIT Madras has special program to offer in Computational Biosciences).

For prospects of Bioinfo, please refer: http://www.biotechnologyforums.com/thread-6862.html

Hope it helps

Best wishes

Hi Sunil,

While preparing for IIT Bombay written test, which Biology books should I refer to?

Hello Pratiksha,

My personal recommendation would be : NCERT books of 11th and 12th standard. Those were the books I followed for Mathematics, and everything was basic enough to be covered by NCERT books.

Their main aim seems to be analysing the basic understanding of the contrasting field of the students. NCERT books should suffice.

Hope it helps.

Best wishes

Hello Sir

Greetings

This is my first post in this forum. I am a student of Botany and have qualified GATE 2015 XL with score 599 and AIR 181. My percentile comes to 97.75. I am interested in doing PhD in Bioscience/Biotech from IITs. Have already applied for Bombay, Jodhpur and Kharagpur.

Just wanted to know is my score sufficient to get a call for the interviews? I have also applied for the M.Tech- PhD dual programme in IIT Kgp. They will evaluate purely on the basis of GATE score and no written test/interview. Do I have a chance to study there? I have no idea about IITs so can you please help me regarding this.

Thanks and regards
Saumita

Hello Saumita,

I assume you are an MSc Botany student? IIT Kharagpur is a good choice considering the fact that they actively pursue projects in Plant Biotechnology. Why don't you apply at IIT Delhi too? Dr. AK Srivastava (my guide during Masters) would be ideal for your background (he conducts research in Plant Biotechnology).: tissue culture, hairy root, biopolymers etc. Make a personal contact with him through email, and you might get a response ( he is extremely polite and supporting).

And you shouldn't be worried about getting a call for PhD, your GATE score should cover most cut-offs.

IIT Madras is also renowned for active research in Plant Biotechnology. On the top of that, are you flexible to pursue PhD abroad? DAAD and Singapore should be considered by you, given such a nice percentile.

I am not aware of the provision for direct PhD enrollment (without any interview) at IIT Kgp. If it's there, you have a highly competitive Score (most GATE aspirants tend to go for a Masters course first, so your chances of getting PhD are always up and high).

And, you mentioned about your application at IITB. I am not sure if anyone actively pursues research in plant biotechnology (or associated field). I hope you have researched about the BSBE IITB well.

If you have any other query, do let me know.

Best wishes

Sunil

Hello Sunil

Thank you so much for the information. It was a big help.
Yes I am MSc Botany and the direct PhD enrollment in IIT kgp I was talking about is "Joint M.Tech- PhD dual degree program". The selection is completely done on the basis of GATE score. Let's see what happens there.

I will definitely get back to you if I have any other query and thanks for the article on post GATE tests and interviews. It was so needed.

Saumita

Hi Mr Sunil

I read you suggestion on following NCERT books for IITB Tests. Does it hold good for MS Research Written test / Interview preparations for IITM and IITD?

What other preparations needed for written tests and interviews especially for MS-Research program of IITM and IITD?

Would appreciate your guidance

Thank You

Sri

Hello Sri,

You shouldn't rely on NCERT books for IITM/IITD. The suggestion was exclusively for IITB.

For IITM/IITD you should focus on the field you are applying for.

For example, for IITD, your concepts in Enzyme Kinetics, Microbial Kinetics, Bioreactors, Biochemistry should be clear.

For IITM, your preparations should be more towards the subject you are going to apply for.

Hope it helps

Best wishes

Sunil

Hello Sunil Bhaiya,
I'm more interested in doing M.Tech in Environmental Engineering rather than Biomedical Engineering, so i hv applied for only Env. for IIT Bombay. Is there any written test for Environmental?
Also, i hv applied for the same in IIT Madras. So, which books should i follow for its preparation?
