Ministry of AYUSH: a govt. of India Initiative - SunilNagpal - 04-28-2015 Not many in India and, of-course in the world would know that recently in November 2014, govt. of India declared the Department of Ayurveda, Yoga & Naturopathy, Unani , Siddha and Homoeopathy (AYUSH) as an Independent Ministry! The now ministry of AYUSH was once Department of Indian System of Medicine and  Homeopathy  (ISM&H), which was created in March 1995. The department was renamed to AYUSH in 2003, but very recently, under the leadership of PM Narendra Modi, it got elevated to a full fledged Ministry: AYUSH. Objectives of the Ministry of AYUSH To upgrade the educational standards in the Indian Systems of Medicines and Homoeopathy colleges in the country. To strengthen existing research institutions and ensure a time-bound research programme on identified diseases for which these systems have an effective treatment. To draw up schemes for promotion, cultivation and regeneration of medicinal plants used in these systems. To evolve Pharmacopoeial standards for Indian Systems of Medicine and Homoeopathy drugs. National Institutes Under AYUSH ALL INDIA INSTITUTE OF AYURVEDA   Institute of Post Graduate Teaching & Research in Ayurveda, Jamnagar (Gujarat)  Morarji Desai National Institute of Yoga, New Delhi  National Institute of Ayurveda (NIA) Jaipur  National Institute of Homoeopathy, Kolkata  National Institute of Naturopathy, Pune  National Institute of Siddha (NIS), Chennai  National Institute of Unani Medicine, Bangalore  Rashtriya Ayurved Vidyapeeth, New Delhi  Creating a separate Ministry for AYUSH reflects upon the seriousness of the Indian government in promoting across the globe the values and utility of Indian systems of Medicine and research. It should encourage the budding biologists to look for a novel line of career in Indian systems of Medicines.
