Hazardous Heavy Metals and Toxic Compounds found in Pepsi, Coca Cola, 7Up and more - stevewoods - 10-06-2016

As per a recent study conducted by the government, Five different hazardous heavy metals and toxins were found as contaminants in beverages of PepsiCo and Coca Cola.

Heavy metals found pertained to: antimony, lead, chromium and cadmium while the toxic compound found consistently was DEHP or Di (2-ethylhexyl) phthalate. These contaminants were observed to be prevalent in samples of Coca Cola, Pepsi, Sprite, Mountain Dew and 7Up.

Study was commissioned by the Drugs Technical Advisory Board and it has been indicated that the source of these contaminants in the cold drinks is polyethylene terephthalate (PET) bottles (bottles they are packed in).

Astonishingly,  no permissible limits have been prescribed for heavy metals in cold drinks in India.

Following is a brief of the level of contamination observed:

Quote:Sprite: 0.015 mg/L of antimony, 0.007 mg/L of lead, 0.003 mg/L of cadmium, 0.015 mg/L of chromium, and 0.016 mg/L of DEHP

Quote:Coca Cola: 0.006 mg/L of antimony, 0.009 mg/L of lead, 0.011 mg/L of cadmium, 0.026 mg/L of chromium, and 0.026 mg/L of DEHP.

Quote:Mountain Dew: 0.012 mg/L of antimony, 0.006 mg/L of lead, 0.016 mg/L of cadmium, 0.017 mg/L of chromium, and 0.014 mg/L of DEHP.

Quote:Pepsi: 0.029 mg/L of antimony, 0.011 mg/L of lead, 0.002 mg/L of cadmium, 0.017 mg/L of chromium, and 0.028 mg/L of DEHP.

Quote:7UP: 0.011 mg/L of antimony, 0.004 mg/L of lead, 0.012 mg/L of cadmium, 0.017 mg/L of chromium, and 0.018 mg/L of DEHP.
