DNA Profiling in Forensic Science and its Advantages
#2
Apart from use in forensic lab, DNA measurement can also be used to predict the life span of individuals! For everything that exists in this world, there is a reason. For hard plastic at the end of lace, there is a reason. The same is for telomeres in chromosome. Interestingly apart from just being like hard plastic, there is one more reason for the existence of telomeres and that it is to predict the life span of any individual, this has been found recently.
Scientist at East Anglia University had studied the length of telomeres which is known as chromosome caps. These telomeres are at the end of chromosome and hold the same. This is like a hard plastic (Telomeres) at the end of lace (chromosome) of boot/shoe. The researcher claim is based upon 20 years of study of around 325 wild populations of Seychelles Warblers at an island.
Any biological age and life expectancy of person can be easily calculated or predicted by measurement of individual’s genome DNA. This is a great outcome of research on telomeres which was done by sampling blood twice in a year to analyze length of telomere.
Here in this research, telomere length indicates the life expectancy better than chronological age. By measuring length of telomere, a biological age of an individual and how much of its life it has used up can be predicted. The research had confirmed that the individuals differ radically in the time span of their telomeres shortening and to have a shorter telomere at any age is related with an increase risk of death. Today researchers are happy to announce that telomere is best indicator of biological age.
With the time, telomeres get shorter and also break and this is related to life span. This information is also used to prevent cells replicating out of control example cancerous cells. At one side telomeres helps in safeguarding us from cancer and on other side, their activities results in ageing. And biotechnologist always focuses on positive side of anything without underestimating the associated risk, resulting in complete management of the system while developing scientific concepts! Idea
