Discoveries and Technologies Inspired by Animal Abilities

Dear Sale0303,

I had gone through your article, really interesting and inspiring !
Thank you so much.

Biologically inspired engineering:

There are great and interesting examples of biomimicry, which are applied in science. These are nothing but best example of biologically inspired "engineering". Through multidisciplinary collaboration between chemists, biologists, bioengineers, material scientists and nanotechnology many developments has been done in this field.

Today scientist had successfully created several nano devices components like nanowires, quantum dots, nanotubes using viral capsids as inspiration. Viruses are 20-300nm in size with outer layer remarkably robust and resistant to extreme temperature as high as 60 °C. They also stay stable in pH ranging from 2-10. The tubular virus particles like TMV are being used as template to develop nanofibers and nanotubes. Also the viral cage structure inspired researcher to produce uniform shape and size quantum dot semiconductor nanoparticles. Such developments have been used as an alternative to apoferritin cage technique which is used for synthesis of CdSe nanoparticles. These materials are used for targeting drug delivery.
Another example is Structural coloration of Morpo butterfly leading to vibrant blue color. This has helped many companies to develop various displays with low power consumption. The bases of which is Butterfly color!
Bombardier beetle example: This beetle’s helped to develop powerful repellent spray which is further developed into a micro mist technology. What they learn from this beetle is that to properly mix chemicals and release them via a steerable nozzle which is at the end of abdomen of beetle.
From where we learn is nature. For what, we learn is applied for well being of mankind and nature.
Let us further develop this unique ability of human’s brain to observe things in a new way and to apply it for development.
Who knows, tomorrow nature may teach us new methods and ways to resolve burning issues of science may be by using a simple butterfly ,microscopic viruses or bees that lives in a social way or by something new, yet un-observed !
