Obesity Drugs - Belviq, Qsymia and Contrave
#1
The Belviq and Qsymia approvals reflect a shift by FDA away from viewing obesity treatments as cosmetics and more as drugs for a growing health problem. Some 75 million Americans (about one-quarter of the U.S. population) are obese, according to American Heart Association.

- Arena Pharmaceutical (ARNA) when it managed to get its obesity drug, Belviq, approved by the FDA on June 27
- Vivus has targeted the fourth quarter to launch Qsymia (phentermine and topiramate extended-release),
- Orexigen Therapeutics's weight loss drug Contrave was rejected by FDA in 2011 assessing cardiovascular (CV) risks.

To overcome obesity, Cardio exercise is the best way. It is nothing but a physical exercises with low intensity and that depends primarily on the aerobic energy generating process. The word Aerobic means living in air (oxygen) and refers use of oxygen to meet energy demand with aerobic metabolism. Such activities help in improving cardio system. In this, light to moderate intensity exercises can be performed for extended time period.
A Cardio exercise includes jogging, running, swimming, walking and cycling. Depending up on the exercise type, the beats per minute are calibrated. This includes Moderate activity which is just for warm up followed by weight control which is to have fitness and to burn fat. Next stage can be Aerobic and that is related to cardio exercises. The anaerobic exercise is nothing but a hardcore exercise for muscles building.
The observed benefits of doing regular (45 minutes per day) aerobic exercise are:
• Strengthening the respiratory system by development of muscles involved in respiration and helps in improving flow of air in and out of the lungs.

• Reduction of blood pressure and improving circulation efficiency.
• Heart muscles strengthening and enlargement, which improves
pumping efficiency and reduce the resting heart rate, which is
also known as aerobic conditioning.
• Increases oxygen level in blood and improve oxygen transport
system. Also increases the total number of red blood cells in
the body.
• Reduces stress, depression, and improved mental health.
• The most important use of aerobic exercise is that it reduces
the risk for diabetes.

VO2 max test is performed to measure aerobic capacity of any individual, in which the subject will have to go through increasing strenuous exercise that is from an easy walk through to exhaustion. The respirometer which is connect is used to measure oxygen consumption.

So we find here that Belviq (lorcaserin HCl) was the first FDA approved chronic weight management therapy. It is usually given in 10 mg tablets of 60 in a bottle. Belviq, according to its website, is prescribed as an adjunct therapy to reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity. However it is only indicated for those who are considered obese in their body mass index (BMI) and overweight but having a weight-related co-morbid condition (such as type II diabetes, hypertension, or dyslipidemia).

I wasn’t able to find out what it exactly does to the body, since the exact mechanism of the regulation of appetite is more or less, yet to be known. However, Belviq is said to be a serotonergic and an anorectic as it reacts to receptors in the brain by making the individual have the feeling of satiety to promote weight loss.

It is true that exercise, especially cardio exercise, does good effects to the body, but the team of Belviq believes that there are people who need their drug too.

“Diet, exercise, and behavioral therapy alone may not result in sustained weight loss for many overweight and obese people trying to lose weight,” asserted Lonnel Coats, also the president of Eisai Inc., makers of the drug, “BELVIQ represents an important therapeutic option for physicians responsible for the medical management of their patients who are overweight or obese.”

It has to be used safely as research show that several adverse reactions have occurred in taking Belviq. These are the Serotonin Syndrome or the Neuroleptic Malignant Syndrome (NMS), Valvular Heart Disease, Cognitive Impairment, Psychiatric Disorders, risk for hypoglycemia, Priapism, Pulmonary Hypertension, and others. Hence, such drugs are given in programs or regimens following strict regulations.

Its New Drug Application (NDA) was submitted to the FDA on December 22, 2009. A year after, the FDA voted to recommend its disproval due to the safety risks. Two years later, the FDA panel voted to approve it again after several rounds of studies. It was officially approved on June 27, 2012, but with the above restrictions.
