Hey guy's.
I am a new biotech student (also new to this forum), this is my first semester and i have been asked to work on a presentation with a group of students in my basic biotech course, the professor left the choice of the topic up to the groups. So i need your help choosing a topic, as i am just having a hard time choosing something suitable as the field is very huge and diverse.
All suggestions appreciated, just keep this in mind. i need a subject that is both simple but something i can turn into a presentation.
Sorry if i left something out, just ask me and ill be more than happy to respond.
thanks.

It is possible to get a semi-reasonable job (I want to get into research, either diseases or nutritional supplements) with just an associates (while completing masters online)?
I want to go to Europe, study a few years to get my associates in Biotech, start working and finish my masters online after that, to minimize downtime and start making money - I don't want to be in college for 5 years, I'm already 25.
Is this a viable strategy?

Hello, my name is Arthur.
I am willing to explore perfusion bioreactor cultivation specifics. Almost all of the information I have gathered over the past 2 months are articles, in which researchers use perfusion bioreactor setups for cultivating mammalian cells. I am willing to perform a similar experiment using TFF, but there is a problem, considering that all mammalia cells seem to be very sensitive to contamination. I won`t be able to perform the experiment on mammalian type cultures, due to the lack of required sterility of the lab in which I work.
Is it possible to perform cultivation processes using perfusion on microbial or yeast cultures? I have performed numerous fermentation processes on Escherichia coli and Saccharomyces cerevisiae in a fed-batch mode, but haven`t found any information about weather I can perform perfusion cultivations on these cultures or some other cultures that do not require a very high level of sterility.
If someone has some experience on this topic or some ideas, please help me with this problem. Also, if someone has some advise about performing perfusion cultivations I would gladly read it. Thank you for your time.))

About this Contest (Theme: PULSE POSTING):
You are expected to make only 2 posts in Diseases and Diagnostics section of BiotechnologyForums (http://www.biotechnologyforums.com/forum-47.html).
Your posts can be:
(a) A New Article or
(b) A response/reply to already existing articles in this section.
This is what this contest is broadly about. Sounds simple? Well, let's make it bit difficult:
WHY IS IT PULSE POSTING?
Because, you are not supposed to make both posts in a single day. Posts must be made in Pulses (well gapped). So that is why it is called Pulse Posting Contest.
WHAT CAN YOU WRITE ABOUT?
(a) If you are writing a new article/thread (start a new thread), then you can write about any disease or diagnostic technique which is not currently written in the given section/ or our forum. Ensure a nice layout for a new article (About the disease, a little background, Causes, Symptoms, Treatment, Latest Research etc can make an article worth reading). You are free to use your own skills though.
(b) If you are writing a reply or response to an already existing article or topic in the given section i.e Diseases and Diagnostics, then ensure that you keep the context unique and different from already posted responses (and obviously it should not be there in the article itself).
TIPS:
1. You can add response to your own article
2. Responses added to different articles have more value than all responses to the same article.
3. A new article would always be weighed above a short reply/response.
4. Both posts can be replies (atleast 300 words)
5. Article should preferably be between 1200-1500 words with images and well defined structure and formatting.
6. Avoid plagiarism. We are not throwing away money for cheaters!
7. Avoid spamming the forum with irrelevant or naive content. It's strictly a BIOTECHNOLOGY / LIFE SCIENCES FORUM. Stay on the track!
8. Two posts is a minimal criteria. You can add relevant posts / responses to the extent you feel interested. Every extra 'RELEVANT' post will be considered.
9. Avoid putting a lot of self stories. Technical content will be more appreciated. Mind it, we said 'avoid "A lot of self stories". Some relevant stories are welcome.
10. Don't rush into posting both posts on a single day!
STRICT RULES:
1. Replies must not be shorter than 300 words.
2. Articles must not be shorter than 1200 words.
3. NO PLAGIARISM.
4. References must be made where ever necessary.
5. Each entry will be awarded marks out of 100. In case of ties, our editing and knowledge management team would hold the right to decide the qualitatively better entry.
6. Entries scoring less than 45 will be rejected.
7. Minimum 3 days should be taken to complete your entry.
8. In case of a tie in marks, the submission time will be taken into account [for free entries] (entry submitted earlier will be given the priority).
***Entries submitted with below mentioned (OPTIONAL) entry fee will get you a Priority Pass for 1st consideration in case of a tie in marks.
================================================================
IMPORTANT: There is an OPTIONAL ENTRY fee of US $1 (INR 60) for participating to get a PRIORITY PASS for 1st consideration (IN CASE OF A TIE IN MARKS) in this contest.

Dear all,
I have applied for a phd at NTU on the basis of my GATE score which is 97 percentile. I had an interview with the supervisor with whom I will work. He was pretty much interested in taking me and was impressed by me. What are the chances of getting a PhD offer?
Can anybody suggest me something?
Thanks

I write as one with a B.S. in Biology but from 20 years ago. Have recently taken interest in gene engineering. Very much would like to get up to speed with gene engineering.
Seeking sources of knowledge e.g. media, texts, etc. that would allow me to select promoters, ribosome binding sites, etc and the other considerations to successfully perform genetic engineering. Much thanks in advance for an informed reply. I close

Colorectal Cancer has been emerging as one of the most prevalent forms of cancer out of changing life styles and eating habits (apart from the genetic predisposition). This thread is aimed at throwing light on all aspects of Colorectal Cancer and encouraging healthy discussions on the same.
What is Colorectal Cancer?
It is a form of Cancer that affects the 'Colon' and/ or Rectal regions of the large intestine. In severe form, following is how it may appear:

What are the colon and rectal regions of the intestine? | Understanding Colorectal Cancer
Colon is commonly known as 'Large Intestine' as well, though both colon and rectum are part of Large Intestine. Colon is the region where water is absorbed and remaining waste material is stored as feces. In the typical diagram of the digestive system, Large intestine (or colon) surrounds the longer (small) intestine.
Rectum is the final section of the large intestine just before anal region where feces are temporarily stored. Following image should explain it all:
Following is a representational image depicting the cancerous growths at Colorectal regions:

What are the Symptoms of Colorectal Cancer? | Understanding Colorectal Cancer
It often starts with change in the bowel habits i.e :
a) Rectal bleeding while passing feces
b) In-consistent and narrowed stools (due to partial intestinal blockage by the tumor)
c) Blackish bowel movements (also called Melena)
d) Mucus in the stool due to excess discharge by the epithelial cells
e) Persistent diarrhea or constipation
f) Feeling a filled gut despite passing the stools
h) Frequent need to pass stools especially 'immediately after meals'
i) Problem of persistent gas/ bloating/ fullness and cramps in abdomen
j) Feeling a lump in abdomen
k) Feeling of nausea/ vomiting/ loss of appetite/ fatigue
l) Weight loss and anaemia due to blood loss in abdomen
m) Frequent urinary tract infection due to perforation of the epithelium/ inner lining of abdomen

Advanced Colorectal cancer can be characterized by its spread to other organs of the body leading to some or all of the following symptoms:
Abdominal Pain that can't be tolerated

Depression, variously called Melancholia, Depressive reaction or Neurosis and major depressive disorder, has been a major cause of disability and suicide through history, and is the most common mental disorder and the leading psychiatric complaint prompting medical consultation in most series.
CLINICAL FEATURES / SYMPTOMS OF DEPRESSION
The manifestations of major depressive disorder are multiple and pervasive, and its effect on life function and quality of life is comparable to that of diabetes.
The chief characteristic of a major depressive episode is : low mood, with anhedonia or inability to derive pleasure from formerly enjoyable activities and pursuits.
Quote:The term has been variously used throughout medical history, at times referring to low mood and diminished energy, at other times to various mood disorders now separated diagnostically and most recently to a syndrome of low mood, diminished self-esteem and loss of interest in former pursuits and activities.

- Rumination over feelings and thoughts of regret, hopelessness, helplessness and unworthiness are common, as are preoccupation with guilt and self-deprecation.
- Depressive symptoms may be accompanied by symptoms of psychosis, particularly self-deprecating or –accusatory delusions or less common frightening or menacing hallucinations.
- Psychotic depressive episodes or major depression of the melancholic type are often associated with impaired concentration and memory, while social withdrawal, abandonment of former activities, decreased sex drive and interest and preoccupation with death or thoughts of suicide are common.
- Sleep disturbance is almost universal, usually early awakening with inability to get back to sleep but also hypersomnolence.
- Multiple physical complaints, chiefly digestive ones or related to headache or fatigue, are common, and in developing countries these are the most common presenting symptoms of depression.
- Decreased appetite and weight loss are more common than increased appetite and weight gain, and recent cognitive symptoms such as forgetfulness and motor symptoms such as slowness are described, particularly in older depressed individuals.
- Either agitated or lethargic behavior may be reported by caregivers of older patients, in whom coexistent physical disorders such as cardiovascular disease, stroke or Parkinson’s disease are more common.
Quote:Mood may be irritable rather than depressed in children, and personality change, inattention and decreased cognitive performance in school may predominate over depressive feelings.

Covering everything requisite of publishing a journal in a single comment might not be possible, but following may be taken as a guideline:
a) Recognize your problem statement. What do you wish to work on? For example, "I wish to work on plants mediated bioremediation."
b) Once you recognize your problem, find out the current state of art in this domain i.e go for literature survey : Download and read thoroughly the research papers published in the selected domain. Starting with a very recently published review paper is the best strategy, it will give you an idea of the overall state of art till date (provided the review paper is a good one!).
c) While you go through the literature, you should be able to identify a specific problem to explore in the selected domain. Like, "Affect of increasing temperatures on the bioremediating traits of a given plant". Identifying a specific problem is a very crucial decision, as it should not be identical to the already existing research. "Re-inventing the wheel is both a waste of time and contribution to research". You should add something of value to the scientific community.
d) Next step is to carry out your research using good laboratory practices. A good journal expects the researcher to have used standard equipment and protocols. Literature will guide you towards best protocols and equipment too. Research needs to be well designed:
f) Next identify a suitable journal for publishing your research. Make a copy of your manuscript and format it according to the structure (font styles, paragraph format etc) specified by the journal. Each journal has its own style of "Bibliography or References", which can be designed using plugins like ZOTERO.
g) Ensure that you shouldn't submit the same research to more than one journal. Wait for the response of the first journal before submitting it to any other.
h) Submitting to conferences often ease the task a bit. You can start with that too!
Ideally, if your are yet to get into the experimental stage in your career, then best way to start with a journal publication is "Writing a Review Paper!"
A review paper is basically a summary of the current state of art for a particular problem statement or field of study. One should go through all published (research based) papers in that field and then make a review paper out of it. This will kick-start your publishing aspirations and also make you adept to the writing skills for a journal publication.
All the Best!

I have graduated in B.Tech in biotechnology in June 2015 and qualified GATE 15 with 93.03 percentile. I haven't yet took the admission into any post graduate programs yet.
I am quite interested to be researcher in the same.
Hence, wanted to choose MS® course but in dilemma with the following queries:
1. How well is it received by the foreign universities if we go for PhD in abroad??
2. Are scholarships available for this program? If yes, what are all?
3. Planning to apply for Jan-May 2016 session of MS®. What are the chances and scope of getting admission into it? Any demerits for Jan-may session compared to July-Nov?
Thanks in advance!!
