B.tech vs B.Sc

What edge does B.Sc has over B.tech considering the field of research ?

Hello Ambeshwar,

If your ultimate goal is to do research, you can go through the route of BSc -> MSc -> PhD.

You can't do MS(Research) after BSc, but you can do it after MSc.

My suggestion would still be: Do B.Tech (it would lead to an all-round development of your scientific aptitude). Then go for MS(Research) and then PhD. Or infact you can directly opt for PhD after B.Tech (if you clear appropriate exams).

One can't directly say that BSc / B.Tech has an edge over the other course.

BSc has following attributes:
Benefits:
a). Graduation in 3 years
b). Completely inclined towards the core subjects/field of study
c). Great theoretical and nice practical hold of the subjects.
d). Best course to start with if looking for a teaching career.
e). Cost effective degree
Shortcomings:
a). Limited inter-disciplinary exposure.
b). Limited internship requirements
c). Nearly zero opportunity to enter a technical job of high package after BSc. MNCs don't prefer BSc candidates for their technical jobs.
d). Pursuing MSc-->PhD almost becomes a necessity.

B.Tech has following attributes:
Benefits:
a). Very nice exposure to all disciplines before/alongwith shifting core focus to the main field of study.
b). Best course to startwith if you wish to learn all aspects of Sciences, without compromising on your core interest.
c). Most preferred course by MNCs for their technical jobs.
d). Nice internship opportunities/requirements.
e). Pursuing M.Tech/PhD is not a necessity to carry your career forward.
f). Can pursue PhD right after B.Tech (Saves 1 year compared to BSc-->MSc-->PhD).
Shortcomings:
a). A lot of competition is there for good jobs in MNCs, owing to exponential increase in number of B.Tech students every year.
b). Unless one starts inclining him/herself towards quality projects/internships from 2nd year onwards, the aptitude towards research takes time to develop.
c). Costly degree

I hope it sheds some light on BSc vs B.Tech.

Let me know if you have any other query.

Best wishes

Sunil
