Hello Prankur,

Tag matters in this world, so I would say it is better to spend 4-5 years in IITs than a quick one from a private university. With due respect to the private universities, I'm saying this based on the current scenario-- Both industry and academia (and even MHRD) have divided the institutes into First, Second and Third Tiers (or say Grade A,B,C). IITs stand in Grade A or Tier 1, hence they are preferred (unless you have exhibited some exceptional research profile in terms of patents, publications despite being from a private university).

Private universities are definitely rising over time (likes of Amity have a good reputation of filing patents across fields), but there is still some time for them to stand in good comparison to IITs/IISc. If you have an option to choose between a private insti and an IIT, then go for IIT.

Hope it helps
