GATE Advice to Low Scorers
#11
Thank You Mr Sunil - Really Appreciate your help.

For IITB, the Gate Cutoff this year is 400 for BT discipline - For branches like CS, EE etc it is in 500 to 600 Range.

My worry was the opportunities that Bio-Medical Eng has as compared to Biotech.

Thanks again for taking time to address my queries

Hello Mr Sunil

IIT Roorkee is offering M Tech Program on Nano Technologies. Candidates with Gate Score in BT are also eligbile amidst others. The course structure has some General subjects on Nanotech with electives on Nanobiotechnology related subjects and project work.

What is your view and what are the career opportunities in the Nano Biotech area?

Also what are your thoughts on (1) Biochemistry (2) Molecular Bio Physics - As per last year trends, my cutoff this year is in range to to apply for Phd Program in bothe these programs at IISC, Bangalore. What are the opportunities and prospects?

Thank You

Hello Sri,

As far as career is concerned, Nanotech's prospects in Indian job sector aren't great. In fact, this field is more a 'research oriented field'. You may easily find a place in some Research organization as a PhD scholar/Research associate/SRF but being a highly specific field, jobs in India might not be plenty for this field. Better pursue a PhD in Nano Biotech related field directly, if you really want to go for it.

A PhD in Biochemistry is a nice choice. PhD in Molecular Bio Physics will require a good knowledge of Mathematics and other allied subjects other than Biology. If you are comfortable with inter-disciplinary studies, you may go for the PhD in Molecular Bio Physics. Keep in mind that after a PhD, mostly you would land up in a reputed Academic institute as an Assistant Prof. Make your career choice based upon your career aspirations.

If getting a job is your immediate requirement then better pursue Masters from an IIT or direct PhD from an institute abroad. If becoming a research scholar/professor is your ultimate goal then pursuing a PhD from one of the best institutes in India will greatly help your career. IITB, IITD, IISc, IITK, IITKgp, IITM, JNU, IIITHyd are no doubt worth going for in India.

Hope it helps

Best Regards

I have got a rank of 49 in GATE 2015. Can you please tell me the options that I have. Are IIT Bombay and IIT Madras good for mtech in biotechnology ? What about the written test and interviews they conduct for admission.?
I am so confused. Please help !
Thanks a lot
Hello Priankay,

First of all congratulations for the brilliant performance. IIT Bombay is undoubtedly one of the best choices, both in terms of the academics and job package. As the M.Tech in IITB is specialized in Biomedical Engg., so it all depends upon your career aspiration (whether you are looking forward to a career in Nano Biotechnology/ Tissue Engineering/ Organ Culture/ Bio-instrumentation etc). Biomedical Engg. is undoubtedly the field of current and future research. If you have an interest in the same, then blindly go for IITB.

If you are interested in Biochemical Engg. then any one of the IITD/IIT Madras will do. I'll recommend IIT Delhi over IIT Madras.

Your percentile is well above 99.5 (assuming 10,000 students appeared). You will easily get a call from Germany (DAAD) and Singapore (NUS) if you apply in time. Do consider that seriously.

If you have interest in business administration, then you may go for NITIE Mumbai (average package after PG is around 10 lpa for a good performer). It takes GATE qualified students with good GATE scores.

You may read my interview experiences here:

Hope it helps

Hi Mr. Sunil

I have got gate rank 968(AIR) , score 391 and a percentile around 90.5-91% (Reserved Category). I did my B.tech in Biotechnology from DTU(DCE), New Delhi with 71.79%.
Also I have presented a paper in IIE International conference held in Phuket, Thailand and received best paper award.
What colleges do You suggest that i can apply for M.tech ??
Also can i apply for PhD in NTU, NUS or German University ??
Will it be a gud idea ? or is it just waste of time ? please suggest I am in great confusion here your help will be appreciated Smile

i have cleared gate BT with AIR 521, gate score 459. is there good chance of getting seat in anna university, chennai or IIT madras?
I have been placed in a job titled Clinical Data Analyst trainee. is it an emerging career with good pay scale?
is it advisable to gain some experience in the job and then continue studies.. since i planned to do mtech only to get a better job (i am not planning to try other IITs or NITs)

Hello Neha,

Consider applying at IIT Delhi/IIT Madras/IIT Hyderabad/IIT Guwahati/University of Hyderabad. You should get an interview call from these. Also, do apply at AcSIR (CSIR labs) PhD program or integrated M.Tech-PhD program. If you have a bright academic profile (1st class in academics, some poster presentations, good recommendations) then you may make an attempt for NUS as well.

Hope it helps

Best Wishes

Hi Bavithra,

Two points need to be considered here:
a. Is your company of good repute? Career growth greatly depends upon the kind of company you are in. Small companies don't have employee friendly appraisal cycles. In the long run, you might end up with a smaller package if the company you are working for is not of good repute.

b. If your pay scale is below 2.4 lpa, it is advisable to go for studies. You can easily get IIT Madras (goes without saying that written and interview will have to be cracked). But getting a job after Masters from IIT Madras requires a good academic performance in most cases. The package won't be less than 5 lpa. If you think that your current job/field of work will land you above or near 5lpa two years from now, then donot go for Masters.

Another viable option is that you can continue with your job for 1 year (get to know the industry) and if you feel comfortable then you may continue. After 1 year of experience, you will easily get Masters in any IIT (your GATE score is valid for 3 years). And even NUS prefers experienced candidates for PhD (wherein the monthly stipend is over S$2000 pm; equivalent to near INR 1,00,000 per month). It will address your academic as well as financial needs

 Hope it helps

Best wishes
