Hi...i am out of station these days...will need to go through your post thoroughly as I settle with a good internet connection...responding using my phone as of now....as far as analytical techniques go, Wilson and Walker's book is the best for that...I followed the same during my BTech as well as Masters....Doran has always been my first and most recommended book for bioprocess...you can find all unit operations in Doran....shall get in touch with detailed suggestions soon..

SIR,
need hints to solve a sum..
animal cells are growing in a 5 m^3 CSTR with blood serum as feed.feed substrate concentration,S0= 20 KG/M^3,u MAX=0.45 HR^-1,Ks=0.8 kg/m^3,Yx/s=0.8.what feed flow rate is required to achieve 90% conversion of the substratre

I am not sure about the solution, but this should be fine:

So = 20
S = 20 x 0.1 = 2 (90% conversion means 10% residual): i.e steady state concentration of the substrate in chemostat
Umax=0.45 hr-1
Ks = 0.8

V=5
We know, Dilution rate = Flow rate / Volume
And, we also know that Dc (Critical dilution rate) = Umax ( S/ Ks+ S)
So, Dc = 0.45 x 2 / 2.8 = 0.9 / 2.8

So, this should give us flow rate = (0.9/2.8) x 5 = 1.607 m3/hr

(Options might give a better hint towards the right approach).

Best wishes
