Hello shriya,

If you wish to pursue a degree from a top notch institute, then you'll have to make sure of following things:

a) Get exceptiona/1st class marks in 12th (High School).
b) Have a strong extra-curricular background.
c) Get admission in a top institute for undergrad studies (if you have good marks, above 90% in 12th, then you can go for Delhi University).
d) If some how you don't possess any of the above, then even after doing undergrad studies in an average institute, you can try your chances for getting admission in IITs/IIITs through GATE. After that you can go for PhD in your area of interest in the institute of interest, provided you perform well in IITs/IIITs.
e) Another way is to directly go for PhD after B.Tech (which will need 1st division in B.Tech and great extra-curricular background).
f) GATE can also land you in institutes like National University of Singapore (that ranks 7 in world for its department of Biomolecular studies).

Hope it helps
