Chronic Migraine: Can Botox Be a Reliable Solution?
#1
Migraine is a condition that is associated with intense headaches, but recurring and severe headaches are included in the symptoms of this condition. It is true that headaches are characteristic symptoms of migraine but there are also symptoms as well as sensitivity to sound and light, vomiting, difficulty in speaking, nausea, and tingling sensation in the body.

It is a common neurological condition and it is mostly genetic and can occur in children as well as adults but it has been observed that more women suffer from migraine as compared to men.

This condition can cause such throbbing headaches that it can interfere with your everyday life and make you go through intense episodes of pain.

But sadly, this neurological condition has no cure but doctors prescribe medications and treatments to treat the symptoms of migraine. Apart from treating the symptoms, the medications or treatments also allows the person to deal with migraines in a way that is aimed to improve their quality of life.

There are many different types of migraine treatments available and each of them is only prescribed after taking into consideration of factors such as the age of the person, existing health condition, past medical history, the severity, type, and symptoms of the condition as well as the type of migraine.

Oral medications, natural remedies, stress management, lifestyle changes, acupuncture, and even meditation can be used for relieving the symptoms of migraines. Women are also prescribed hormone therapy if their migraines have connections to their menstrual cycle and reproductive health.

In recent years, many alternative treatments are being explored, prescribed, and recommended for migraines, and one of them is Botox.

Botox and Its Potential as Migraine Treatment

Botox has been used in the medical world for a long time and it has been used for a variety of things including the treatment of excessive sweating and cosmetic purposes.

Even though Botox has a variety of medical uses, it is most famously known for the prevention of fine lines and wrinkles. While Botox is wonderfully effective in allowing people to retain and maintain their youthful appearances, it also has a bunch of other important medical uses.

Many people who used Allergan Botox for wrinkle prevention report that it has reduced the occurrence of headaches, and thus Botox was explored as a potential migraine treatment, and as of now, Botox is an FDA-approved treatment for migraines.

How Does Botox Help As a Migraine Treatment?

Anyone who has used Allergan Botox or heard about this cosmetic treatment knows that the Botox injections relax the muscles thereby giving you smooth wrinkle-free skin.

When the muscles relax after the injection of Botox, there is a decrease in the muscle tension in that region, and thus less pain which can be a contributing factor that makes it effective in the treatment of migraine headaches.

Botox also works as a peripheral nociceptive neurotransmitters inhibitor which restricts the central pain processing system which is the reason behind migraine headaches.

Apart from offering relief from migraine headaches, Botox also offers treatments of other symptoms of migraine such as the sensitivity of sound, smells and bright light, vomiting, and nausea.

How is Botox to be used for The Treatment of Chronic Migraine?

A long course of Botox injection is to be followed for the treatment of Chronic Migraine, and it includes 31 injections, which contains 5 units of Botox in each injection, so the complete treatment includes 155 units of injection.

It is injected in areas such as the forehead, the temples, back of the head, upper bride above the nose, neck, and upper back, the injection area is determined by your doctor based on the symptoms of your migraine as well as your current medical health.

When you use Botox for the treatment of chronic migraines, you should know that it does not offer immediate or quick results. You may experience the positive impact of Botox injections on the symptoms of migraine in about 10-14 days at least after your first injection. For some people, it may take more than 1 injection of Botox to experience relief from your symptoms.

While the duration of migraine treatment spans over a considerable span of time, but the results are long-lasting, and you will experience relief from migraine for up to 3 years after the course of your Botox treatment is complete.

The procedure of injecting Botox into your migraine problem areas will be painless for most people, and the actual procedure will only take about 10-15 minutes and there is no resting period required after the treatment for most people so you can go about your day as usual after your Botox session.

Typically, Botox is administered only once in a span of 3 months, so you will not have trouble allocating time to it.

How safe is Botox for the Treatment of Chronic Migraines?

Even though Botox was used as a poison during World War II, Botox treatment is one of the safest treatments you will find in the medical world.

If we talk about the safety of Botox injections for the treatment of chronic migraines, you should know that most people do not experience any side-effects. If the side-effects occur, it is only due to the spread of the Botox beyond the area in which it is injected. This can be easily prevented by going to a doctor who is specialized in Botox treatments.

Botox is completely safe and it is also used in various other areas, for instance, many dental health issues are solved by Botox injections.

Botox is FDA approved for the treatment of chronic migraine, but it is used for many off-label medical treatments with roaring success.

Botox as an Effective and Safe Chronic Migraine Treatment

If all the other types of chronic migraine treatment do not work for you, then your doctor may suggest Botox treatment. The cost of Botox treatment is high, especially because it needs multiple units of Botox per session but most health insurances cover the cost of Botox if it is used for chronic migraine.
