Dear sir,
I am shoaba akhtar btech biotechnology 2nd year student. I am new to this field because of i have very little knowledge about the subject taught in biotechnology and various competitive exam. I have read many of yours article and decide to prepare for gate. Then i look for gate syllabus but wasn't able to understand ot. They have mentioned too many topics which scares me. I may appear stupid to you but i am really worried as i don't have any idea about when to start preparing? How to prepare? Which subject to prepare first? I even buy a book of bioprocess engineering by doran by reading one of your article on books. I start preparing from it but again all my efforts gone into vain. Then i decided to solve previous year question paper but i couldn't find it on internet with answer with proper reason as why the answer is correct and other option are incorrect. Please sir guide me and reply as soon as possible.

India has one of the largest employment in Biotech in entire world, because our country is crowded with Pharma companies (to serve generic drugs to the developing, middle class population), it is crowded with Food and Beverage companies (to feed the nation), it is crowded with Research Labs in all fields of Life Sciences (you will find a commercial research lab as well an academic research lab in almost every city!!), even IT companies are hiring Bioinfo people these days.

Let's jot down key fields of Biotechnology wherein you can put your steps for a career:
1. Microbiology
2. Agricultural Biotechnology
3. Genetic Engineering
4. Clinical Research
5. Biochemical Engineering
6. Immunology (Biotechnology in fighting/diagnosing disease)
7. Food Biotechnology
8. Veterinary Sciences
9. Biomedical Engineering (artificial organs/synthetic organs/bio-instruments)
10. Bioinformatics (Computational Biology)
11. Marine Biology (Life in oceans)
12. Extra-terrestrial Biology (Life in space)
13. Environmental Biotechnology
14. Nano-Biotechnology (an emerging field with applications in Health Research and Diagnostics

If you got selected in any core lab/company that suits your field then I would suggest you to join it and then use your experience and talent to crack the interview of the big firms (there are plenty of walkins for experienced candidates in every company).

The syllabus of GATE is almost similar to the syllabus of our B.Tech curriculum. If we prepare well for our semester exams with clear concepts and keep practicing mock test of each subject side by side then GATE is not a Ghost. Also keep revising the part that you have done before on weekends.
